Azcon Y El Ministro Puente Acuerdan Pedir Celeridad A Francia Para Reabrir El Somport

Azcón and Minister Puente agree to ask France to speed up the reopening of Somport

The President of Aragon and the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, have confirmed their willingness to make every effort and coordinate as many actions as possible to achieve the opening of this international route to traffic as soon as possible

"We want to express the need to reopen the international Somport tunnel as soon as possible", Azcón has settled, who has stressed that "it is a fundamental infrastructure not only for the inhabitants of the territory, but also for the economy, for tourism and for the goods and services of the valley of Canfranc".

Zaragoza, October 27, 2022.- The president of the Zaragoza Provincial Council, Juan Antonio Sánchez Quero, and the mayor of Zaragoza, Jorge Azcón, have met this morning in Zaragoza with the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez. Among other issues, those responsible have addressed the situation of the Somport tunnel, closed since February 2023 due to a fire in the French part of the infrastructure.

After the meeting, which Sánchez Quero has described as "very positive", progress has been made in the coordination of actions to be carried out to reopen the international pass, a priority for the Provincial Council and the Zaragoza City Council, as well as for the communities of Aragon and Navarre.

In this sense, Azcón has indicated that the Government of Aragon is "the first interested" in reopening the infrastructure and that it will make "all the necessary efforts" and coordinate "as many actions as possible" to achieve it..

The mayor of Zaragoza has underlined that the opening of the tunnel "is essential to improve communication between Spain and France and, therefore, for the economy of the entire region." "It is a direct and safe route to move goods, services and people and, above all, an axis that generates wealth and progress for our entire territory", he has pointed out.

For his part, Sánchez Quero has pointed out that "it has been a very positive meeting" and has highlighted that "the minister has shown great sensitivity to the situation of the Somport tunnel and has accepted our request for support." "We have agreed to draw up a roadmap together to carry out the necessary actions so that the tunnel is reopened as soon as possible", he added.

Both Sánchez Quero and Azcón have agreed to request that the French authorities speed up the deadlines so that the tunnel can be reopened to traffic as soon as possible.
